Ranpak Holdings has launched a new paper void fill made from grass fibres, called GrasiKraft.
According to the company, Ranpak is the first to offer grass paper in its standard void fill portfolio, alongside its range of automated packaging solutions and paper converters for various box applications.
Made from sustainably harvested grass fibres and recycled paper, this paper combines the performance of Ranpak’s other products with the benefits of using grass as an additional fibre source. These include reduced water usage in manufacturing and the diversification of renewable fibers, supporting the circularity of secondary packaging materials.
GrasiKraft is the result of a partnership with Creapaper, a producer of grass fibre raw material, to explore grass as a sustainable fibre for papermaking. The development process involved extensive testing to create a strong dunnage material compatible with Ranpak’s existing converters.
Grass is a highly renewable resource, harvested multiple times a year. GrasiKraft uses fibres from agricultural land margins, reducing transportation distances and increasing land productivity. It can also be sourced from rewetted moorlands, helping preserve biodiverse habitats in Central Europe.
Omar Asali, chairman and CEO of Ranpak, said: “We are thrilled to add GrasiKraft paper to our product offering. As our first commercially available paper material that uses grass as a fibre source, this milestone is an important step as Ranpak continues to evaluate the most sustainable materials possible. We believe that single-use packaging should be recyclable and come from renewable resources to protect our world for future generations, and the renewable qualities of grass as a material make it a perfect fit."
