Barentz, a player in the speciality ingredients sector, has appointed Derk Jan Terhorst as group chief executive officer, effective immediately.

Terhorst succeeds Terry Hill, who served as Interim CEO since May 2024.

With over three years of experience at Barentz as Group CFO, Terhorst brings a robust background in financial management and strategic oversight.

His tenure at Barentz has been marked by contributions to the company’s strategic direction and operational initiatives.

Prior to joining Barentz, Terhorst held key roles at Ahold Delhaize and Tony’s Chocolonely, where he gained valuable insights into international financial dynamics across Europe and the US.

Ben Osnabrug, a partner at Cinven and member of Barentz’s Supervisory Board, said: “Derk Jan’s deep understanding of our business and his proven track record in delivering results position him as the ideal leader to steer Barentz into its next growth phase”. He also expressed gratitude to Terry Hill for his interim leadership during a transitional period.

In his acceptance of the role, Terhorst added: “I am honoured to take on this role and continue working alongside our talented teams globally. Our focus on principal management, sales acceleration and operational excellence will be pivotal as we navigate future challenges and opportunities."

As part of the transition, Barentz has announced that a new CFO will be appointed, effective May 1 2025. Until then, Terhorst will retain his CFO responsibilities.

Barentz operates in over 70 countries, with a strong presence in Europe and North America, and is expanding its footprint in Latin America and Asia-Pacific.

The company reported a turnover of approximately €2.4 billion and serves over 27,000 customers worldwide, underscoring its significant role in the global food and beverage manufacturing landscape.
