Will passengers miss their bottled water on the Dreamliner?

When the new Boeing 787 ‘Dreamliner’ finally takes to the skies at the end of the year, it looks as though the operating airlines might not be offering bottled water from the in-flight service cart.

Boeing is planning to use point-of-entry ultraviolet water purification systems on all its $125m 787 commercial aircraft.

The new systems, developed by Zodiac Aerospace’s Monogram Systems division, meet all the EPA guidelines for in-flight water safety, and the system will be continually monitoring and cleaning water throughout the cabin.

What will the 300+ paying Dreamliner passengers think about this development? We’ll have to wait and see, but when you consider the reputation of cabin air quality, I suspect many would be reassured by their trust in bottled water. Or maybe they’ll just stick to the cocktails menu instead?
